Postdoctoral position in mesoscale precipitation modeling and GPS radio occultation data assimilation at SIO.
Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego invites applications for a postdoctoral position to develop and implement observation operators for an analysis system to assimilate new remote sensing observations, which contain precipitation information. The successful candidate will use the new tools and the Weather and Research Forecasting model to carry out Observation System Simulation Experiments; perform data assimilation experiments; and conduct sensitivity tests of observations to different model microphysics. Experience with radar, microwave, or GPS radio occultation observations is especially relevant.
This project is part of a broader effort to use innovative GPS radio occultation observations from aircraft to improve forecasting of heavy precipitation events. This is a 4-year joint project with the University of California, Davis, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Purdue University, and the Institute for Space Studies in Catalunya (IEEC).
